What goes wrong with lighting, and how we avoid it

The wrong dimmer

Most flicker and buzz complaints come from a dimmer that was not designed for LED loads. We match the dimmer to the fixture, every time.

A fan on a light box

A standard ceiling box is not rated to hold a moving fan. It loosens, wobbles, and eventually fails. We install fan-rated boxes with proper bracing.

Mismatched color temperature

Warm bulbs in one fixture, cool in the next, and the room looks off. We help you choose one temperature and keep it consistent.

Too few, too far apart

Recessed lights placed by guesswork leave shadows. We lay them out to the room, not to the joists.

Exterior fixtures that corrode

Salt air destroys the wrong fixture in a year. We specify coastal-rated hardware for anything outside.

Heavy fixtures on the wrong box

Chandeliers and large pendants need a box rated for the weight, and sometimes bracing above it. We check before we hang it.

How the job goes

Walkthrough
We look at the room, the existing wiring, and what you want the light to do. We take notes and count the fixtures.
Layout and written quote
For recessed lighting we lay out the pattern with you. The quote is itemized per fixture or per room.
Permit where required
New circuits and some exterior work are permitted. Simple fixture swaps on existing circuits typically are not. We tell you which is which.
Installation
Clean cuts, dust contained, fixtures hung level, dimmers programmed. We test every switch before we leave.
Walk it with you
You see it all lit, at night if we can. Anything not right gets fixed then, not on a callback.

Questions we get

Do you supply the fixtures?

Either way. We can supply and install, or install fixtures you have already chosen. If you are buying your own, tell us the model before we quote so we can check the box and dimmer requirements.

Can you convert my old can lights to LED?

Yes. Retrofit trims fit most existing cans and are the fastest upgrade there is. Where the old cans are damaged or not rated for insulation contact, we replace them.

Why does my LED flicker on the dimmer?

Almost always the dimmer. Older dimmers were built for incandescent loads and cannot handle the low wattage of LEDs. A compatible dimmer fixes it.

Does a ceiling fan need a permit?

Replacing a fan on an existing fan-rated box generally does not. Adding a fan where there was none, or running a new switch leg, usually does. We will tell you before we start.
