Things to know before you buy the charger

Your service may need to grow first

A 60A charger on a house that already has a pool pump, two air handlers, and an electric range can push a 150A service over the line. We tell you that before any money changes hands, not halfway through.

Continuous load rules apply

Chargers run for hours, so the code treats them as continuous loads. A 48A charger needs a 60A breaker, not a 50A. This is where DIY installs fail inspection.

Hardwired usually beats a plug

A hardwired connector avoids the outlet, the plug, and the heat they generate under sustained load. For a charger you will use daily, we usually recommend it.

Where the panel is decides the price

A garage next to the panel is a short run. A detached carport across the yard is trenching. We quote based on the actual path.

Two cars means planning now

If a second EV is likely, we can size the circuit or the sub-panel for it today, which is far cheaper than opening the wall twice.

Some utilities offer rebates

FPL and some municipalities have had charger incentive programs. Check what is current before scheduling; the requirements often include a permitted installation.

Questions we get

Can I just plug into my dryer outlet?

A dryer outlet is not designed for hours of continuous load, and sharing it means unplugging the dryer. A dedicated circuit is the safe answer and the one that passes inspection.

Which charger should I buy?

For Tesla owners the Wall Connector is the simplest. For everyone else, a hardwired J1772 unit from a major brand. Buy it before we quote so we size the circuit to the real hardware.

How fast will it charge?

A 48A Level 2 charger adds roughly 30 to 44 miles of range per hour depending on the vehicle. Overnight is a full battery for almost any EV on the road.

Does this need a permit?

Yes. A new 240V circuit is permitted work in every Broward municipality, and the permit is often required for rebates.
